Have you ever heard someone speak about a victim-s

Have you ever heard someone speak about a victim-survivor and say?
• Well why was she out drinking anyway?
• She shouldn’t have argued with him
• She should have known better than to dress like that
• If she hadn’t upset him in the first place, maybe this wouldn’t have happened
• Well that’s just what it’s like when you work in a male dominated workplace

These are statements that undermine the experiences of women who experience violence and condone the abuse. We need to safely call this out! Question them and ask:
• What do you mean?
• But why did he choose to do that?
• That’s no excuse!

To make change, we need to challenge the beliefs that justify, excuse, trivialise or downplay violence against women. To challenge the beliefs that blame the victim rather than the perpetrator. Someone’s choice to use violence isn’t the victim-survivor’s fault.

If you hear it, call it out.

Did you know that violence against women is preventable?

We’re not just talking an individual level here – we mean, there are real things that we can all do to prevent violence against women from happening in our communities.

@OurWatch, the peak body for prevention of violence against women in Australia, has pulled the global evidence together to show that there are 4 actions we can be taking to make massive change:

• Challenge the condoning of violence against women
• Promote women’s independence and decision-making in public life and relationships
• Build new social norms that foster personal identities not constrained by rigid gender stereotypes
• Support men and boys in developing healthy masculinities and positive, supportive male peer relationships

Follow us over the next few weeks as we do a deep dive into what that actually means, and what you can be doing right now to create a better future for everyone.

Farewell 2023. Thank you so much for all your support for the HaiR-3Rs program over this past year. We have loved meeting new faces and providing essential training to assist the hair and salon community to support clients and colleagues who might be experiencing family violence.

The Christmas and New Year’s period can be such an exciting and enjoyable time for many families. But it can also be a hard, busy and stressful time for many. For some, it can be a time they fear.

In fact, the rates of family violence increase during this period and it is an especially busy period for family violence services and first responders.

We encourage you all to practice your 3Rs.
• Recognise: Look out for and recognise signs of family violence in your friends and families.
• Respond: Speak up and check in with people who you think might be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship.
• Refer: Let someone know where they can get professional family violence support.

On average, one woman is killed each week by their current or former partner in Australia. Devastatingly 2023 has seen this statistic grow with a total of 59 women being killed due to intimate partner violence so far this year in Australia. This is 59 women who were colleagues, bosses, mothers, neighbours and friends, whose lives were cut short by the selfish actions of others.

Enough is enough. Our society needs to do better. We need to invest in family violence prevention, early intervention and response services to support these growing statistics and help to stop women and children being killed due to family violence. We know that we can put an end to these alarming rates of family violence by investing in a more gender equal society where women are respected and treated fairly. This is everyone’s responsibility.
